MICHAEL LIEBERMAN, viola
Michael Lieberman, Violist, pursues a varied career in music and is in demand as a chamber musician, orchestral player, solo performer and teacher.
During the 2000-2001 season Michael performed to rave national reviews as violist in the quintet for the world premier of Philip Glass's
opera, "In the Penal Colony". The orchestra consisted of a single string quintet that is on stage and in costume during the entire performance. After giving the world premier in Seattle, the production moved to Chicago and New York eventually giving a total of approximately 115 performances.
In the summer of 2002, Michael was co-host of the 30th International Viola Congress. The event which was later reviewed in both Strings and Strad magazines, was a showcase for over 40 of the most important and prestigious violists the world over. With well over 500 Congress participants, daily lectures, masterclasses, concerts, commercial and luthier exhibits, the event was a week-long celebration of the viola in our time.
Michael has performed with the Los Angeles Opera, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Northwest Sinfonietta, Oregon Symphony, the Maryland Symphony, the Bach Ensemble of Baltimore as Asst. Principal and the Cascadian Chorale and Seattle Choral Company as principal. Having recently moved to Southern California, Michael has joined the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and plays regularly with the Santa Barbara Symphony and Opera Santa Barbara.
He has served on the faculty of the Cascade and Seattle Youth Symphonies and Academy of Music Northwest.
Michael studied at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore with Paul Coletti and lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, fellow violist, Helen Callus.
